How to convert US gallons to litres
Enter a volume in US gallons and read it in litres. The result updates as you type. The table below also shows imperial (UK) gallons, and you can pick imperial gallons from the From menu.
A US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 litres.
1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres
Formula: litres = US gallons × 3.785411784
- Multiply the number of US gallons by 3.785411784.
- For imperial gallons, multiply by 1 imp gal = 4.54609 L instead. Select imperial gallons in the From menu to do this directly.
- For a quick estimate, multiply by 4. It runs about 5.7% high.

Things to keep in mind
- A gallon is not one size. A US gallon is about 17% smaller than an imperial gallon, so 10 US gallons and 10 imperial gallons are different amounts of fuel.
- Fuel economy differs the same way: miles per US gallon and miles per imperial gallon cannot be compared directly.
- Volumes cannot be negative, so the converter rejects a negative value.
