How to convert feet to metres
Enter a length in feet and read it in metres. The result updates as you type, and you can swap the units or copy the answer.
The international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 metres, so this conversion is exact.
1 foot = 0.3048 metres
Formula: metres = feet × 0.3048
- Multiply the number of feet by 0.3048.
- If the length is given in feet and inches, first turn the inches into feet by dividing by 12: 5 ft 9 in is 5 + 9 ÷ 12 = 5.75 ft, and 5.75 ft = 1.7526 m.
- For a quick estimate, multiply by 0.3. The exact factor is slightly larger, so the estimate runs about 1.6% low.

Things to keep in mind
- This is the international foot, exactly 0.3048 m. The US survey foot, used in some American land surveys, is about two parts per million longer and was deprecated by NIST from 2023. Over everyday distances the two are indistinguishable.
- Aircraft altitudes and airport elevations are quoted in feet in most countries, even where road distances are metric.
