Convert any data unit
Pick any two units and convert between them: bits and bytes, the decimal units (kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and their bit equivalents) and the binary units (kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, tebibytes). The result updates as you type.
Every unit is defined against the bit, and every factor is a whole number, so the conversions are exact.
Units at a glance
| Unit | Symbol | Size |
|---|---|---|
| bits | bit | The base unit for data. |
| bytes | B | 1 byte = 8 bits |
| kilobits | kbit | 1 kilobit = 1,000 bits |
| kilobytes | kB | 1 kilobyte = 8,000 bits |
| megabits | Mbit | 1 megabit = 1,000,000 bits |
| megabytes | MB | 1 megabyte = 8,000,000 bits |
| gigabits | Gbit | 1 gigabit = 1,000,000,000 bits |
| gigabytes | GB | 1 gigabyte = 8,000,000,000 bits |
| terabits | Tbit | 1 terabit = 1,000,000,000,000 bits |
| terabytes | TB | 1 terabyte = 8,000,000,000,000 bits |
| kibibytes | KiB | 1 kibibyte = 8,192 bits |
| mebibytes | MiB | 1 mebibyte = 8,388,608 bits |
| gibibytes | GiB | 1 gibibyte = 8,589,934,592 bits |
| tebibytes | TiB | 1 tebibyte = 8,796,093,022,210 bits |
Decimal and binary prefixes
Kilo, mega, giga and tera mean powers of 1,000 in the SI system: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Kibi, mebi, gibi and tebi mean powers of 1,024: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Storage makers use decimal units, while some operating systems report binary units under the decimal names, which is why a "1 TB" drive can appear as about 931 "GB".
Bits and bytes
A byte is 8 bits. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second and file sizes in bytes, so a 100 megabit connection moves at most 12.5 megabytes per second.
